. hello. the half-brother of afghanistan's president karzai has been killed and an attack and the south of the country. ahmad wali karzai, one of the powerful men and southern afghanistan, was shot dead inside his house reportedly by his bodyguard. she was head of the provincial council and kandahar. there were previous attempts on his life. our correspondent joins us from kabul. quentin, not the first attempt on his life, but what more can you tell us? >> he was killed by his longtime friend, a trusted head of security. killed by 2 gunshot wounds earlier this morning. the taliban has said that they carried out the attack. they have been successful and kandahar at assassinating leaders in the past year. the talibsaan say this is one of their biggest achievements in 10 years of war. i was speaking to a u.s. official who said she was a controversial official. they knew about the allegations of drug dealing. as a result of his death, there are worries about what might happen in kandahar. >> does it change karzai's position of strength? >> he was a key figure in the fight against the taliba

. security has intensified after the bomb attack. now to afghanistan where five people were killed today in a blast inside of a mosque. the attack was carried out by a man who hid explosives in his turban. this took place during a memorial service for president karzai's brother, ahmad wali karzai. four more of his brothers and the governor of kandahar were in the mosque at the time but they were not heard. >> and other deadly attack in the heart of kandahar. officials were attending a service for the president's brother when the bomber struck. the police security area. among the dead, an influential clear -- among the dead, an influential cleric opposed to the taliban. the brunt of this attack was borne by ordinary afghans. late on wednesday, six villagers died in a raid during an operation to flush out insurgents from near the pakistan border. among the victims, women and children. this has led to a wave of anger among afghans. the protests have taken place pressing for the withdrawal of western forces. that is about to happen. some are wondering, at what cost. starting next week and ov

. >> there has been an attack on a mosque in afghanistan's southern city of kandahar. it appeared during the service of the brother of hamid karzai, ahmed wali karzai who was assassinated this week. >> i was if this mosque 30 minutes before the explosion took place. the memorial service for ahmed wali karzai was taking place. government officials, people from across the country. security was extremely tight. i was talking to other people when the explosion took place. according to eyewitnesses who were inside the mosque, as soon as the attacker tried to get inside the mosque, he was stopped by security guards, he detonated his explosive vest killing a prominent religious leader and injuring 10 others. doctors at the main hospital have told me they have five dead bodies. the scene here is one of chaos and panic. all the key roads have been closed and in the last 30 minutes or so, there have been visible decreases in traffic. shops have been closed as well. >> some other stories for you. united nation's reports a 15% increase in civilian deaths across afghanistan since last year. the u.n.

of defense, leon panetta. panetta arrived from afghanistan. iran is supplying weapons to extremists in iraq as they prepare to leave the country. panetta says he will not walk away from this challenge and urging iraq to crack down on the insurgents. troops were killed in june. three more in the first ten days of this month. a few hours after panetta spoke with u.s. troops, three rockets landed in the green zone in central baghdad, no casualties. >>> in texas, hundreds of people attended the funeral service today for a man who fell to his death at a texas rangers baseball game. 39-year-old shannon stone will be buried in his hometown of brownwood. a firefighter died thursday after falling 20 feet while trying to catch a ball for his 6-year-old son with him at the game. josh hamilton tossed a foul ball to the stands. he reached for the ball but lost his balance and crashed head first to a score board. the rangers have donated an undisclosed sum of money to help the stone family. >>> even though british tabloid "news of the world" printed the last issue on sunday, the scandal hitting rupert mu

these savings from withdrawing from iraq and afghanistan. and essential education, job creation, housing, and environmental investments where america's economic recovery and for our strong economic future would be protected from the slashing cuts proposed by the house republicans. the irony is, republican leaders previously have backed all the spending reductions called for in leader reid's plan. now, i don't agree -- and i suspect all of us don't agree with all aspects of this proposed solution. but we're not going to have 100 solutions on this floor. we're going to have one that we can vote on. i wish this would have included new revenue, especially by ending such costly and outdated tax benefits as those still enjoyed by the biggest oil companies to help us pay off our debt even more quickly. i'd like to help pay for the debt incurred by the inexcusable earlier decisions to enter two wars without paying for them. and i continue to believe the surcharge for the wealthiest would mean that they would pay more of their fair share after so many years of tax cuts that have tilted far more t
